Salah a-Din Treaty with the CrusadersHistorical Story written by Yaron
Shaool Ka Gold Jewelry shop manager
In the recent summer, I visited Israel (I normally reside
in BC Canada). I was lucky to join a special tour in the
old city of Jerusalem by a guide that is familiar with
both the history of Jerusalem and our current day’s
complex reality. He had also written a book about the old
city called “Jerusalem - one square kilometer”. One of the most interesting stories that he told us was about the time when Salah a-Din came to conquer Jerusalem from the crusaders. His armies were surrounding the city and his commands were to kill everyone in the city. This was in response to the same actions done by the crusaders years before when they conquered the city and murdered everyone in it. Church of the Holy Sepulchre in

But the crusader and the people of the city gave a hard fight. At some point, the leader of the crusaders went to negotiate with Salah a-Din and manage to get him to agree to let the crusaders leave peacefully and return to their lands. Historians are not exactly sure what was said to convince Salah a-Din to that treaty but our guide had an interesting theory. Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem
He said that the crusader’s leader threatened Salah a-Din that they will ruin Al-Aqsa Mosque to the ground before they will be killed. Salah a-Din understood how devastating it will be for the many soldiers who traveled so far for a holy war to find the target of it in ruins. Furthermore, he also left the Church of the Holy Sepulchre almost untouched. Some say as a strategy to protect the people next time the crusaders will come to conquer Jerusalem… Our Current Special - Jewish
